Get to Know Your Pet Trainer: Kim Kowalski

Kim Kowalski is our newest addition to the AAWL’s Education department.

I am very excited to be apart of the Arizona Animal Welfare League  & SPCA as a professional pet trainer/educator. What a wonderful experience to work with dogs that need to stay in their forever homes.

My passion for dogs began nearly 20 years ago when I received my first dog and not just  “the family pet”, but mine – all mine. My first dog came as a birthday present in the form of a Dalmatian named Nocchi. I took Nocchi through obedience classes and immediately loved working with her (dogs).  I apprenticed with the trainer for almost two years. At this time this had become a wonderful “hobby” for me and I continued to follow my “career” of Graphic Design/Visual Communications.

After working in design for five years I decided a change was needed and pursued pet training as my full time job. I decided to expand my knowledge and went to work with PetSmart. During my five years with them I helped pilot and launch several new pet education classes along with training a handful passionate pet people to become pet trainers for the company.  I was with PetSmart for nearly six years.

After PetSmart I went on to work for Pete & Mac’s Pet Resort. This was a wonderful opportunity in which I furthered my knowledge on the dog pack and pack mentality. At Pete & Mac’s I was given opportunities to help dogs with cage aggression, fear aggression, shyness and social pack behaviors (daycare).

Then in the Spring of 2008 I came to work for the Arizona Animal Welfare League and SPCA. I love having the opportunity to help dogs stay in their forever homes.  I will readily admit that my favorite reason for being a pet trainer is helping pet parents understand that an obedience trained dog is more fun and less stress! I would have to say on the flip side, there are drawbacks especially when an owner wants a miracle cure but is not willing to work for it. BE MORE STUBBORN THAN YOUR DOG! – is the motto I live by.

One of my objectives for being a pet trainer is to spread the message that dogs are not disposable. People get dogs for a reason (or any pet for that matter) and I want to make sure that that dog stays in it’s forever home.

I look forward to meeting and working with you -- Kim Kowalski
